Can a growth spurt cause temporary hair loss?

I am 17 years old and have always had thick, long hair. However recently, I noticed more hairs were falling out than usual and even my hairline was receding a little. Naturally, being only 17 years old, I am concerned. I was trying to come up with a few theories for why this could be happening, and then I thought perhaps it is the result of a growth spurt, because during growth spurts there can be high levels of testosterone which can lead to hair loss. So, my question is: Can a growth spurt cause hair loss?
And, more importantly: is the hair loss temporary?
